The south east corner of Downtown Tampa is known as the Channel District. Living in this area one can live, work, and play. Commonly know as Channelside, this area is connected to Downtown Tampa and Ybor City by the TECO streetcar. Along the water in the district is Channelside Bay Plaza which has plenty of bars, restaurants, and shops with an open air concept. Recently there has been a lot of interest in the area from several developers with projects all over the area in the works. Currently the Channel District is the home of the Tampa Bay Lightning who play their games at Amalie Arena. Also in the district is The Florida Aquarium, the Tampa Bay History Center, Port Tampa Bay, The Tampa Riverwalk, dog parks and plenty of restaurants and nightlife. Channelside has seen massive growth over the last few years with plenty more in the future. The Tampa Bay Lightning owner Jeff Vinik is developing land in the Channel District with plans to bring USF Health Downtown. Backed by Bill Gates, Vinik and his team are in the midst of spending roughly 2 Billion dollars in the area along with several other developers over the next few years.
